Educational Musings is a personal collection of resources, curriculum, approaches and theories.  It is not intended to be an extensive listing of what is out there - but a place for brainstorming and refining my thoughts about education.  Most people recommend that you develop a family philosophy of education (and really life) in order to point your child(ren) towards becoming adults.  This is my collection of thoughts as we develop that philosophy for our family.  I invite you to peek inside, question, challenge and comment from your experiences.

This is still in draft form so for now the best way to navigate is to use the sidebar to see what I have already put up.  Hopefully over time this will be fleshed out a little bit.

A little about me.

I ALMOST became a public school educator - but my last semester of college (after running an after school program) I decided that I wasn't prepared to be confined to a classroom all day.  I preferred working with students in out of school settings and that's what I've done since then.  I have worked with school administrations and non profits serving children in different capacities and directly with students.  My work with students has been in out of school settings (summer camps, church groups, etc.)  I ran a high school boarding program for over 2 years - the ultimate in out of school, but real life, education. This past year I led a small preschool coop with a Montessori focus for a group of my friends.

I do think the MOST important aspect of education is faith and character development.  These are also the areas fraught with conflict in public education and hard to define by a curriculum. So, although I may not discuss these areas as much as the "academics" these core beliefs and issues do influence my choices and outlook.  In the end, many of these aspects of living are "are caught, not taught" and that's something that you cannot fit into a curriculum.

I am not an educational purist and I am still trying to find a mix of educational theory that will work for me.  This site is about bringing together the approaches and ideas that I like and thinking about developing an educational plan for my son.  At this point we are undecided about what we will do with his education (he is not even 2 yet!) - but in the end I feel that a child's education is primarily a parent's responsibility.  All of life is educational - and I want to bring that love of learning into every aspect of our lives.
